So Close Yet So Far in the Semi Final
In a cut and thrust semi final between Auckland and Southland, it was Southland who finished the stronger and proceeded to the final of the Inter Provincial Tournament at the Poverty Bay Golf Club.
The match was tight all the way; all square after 5 holes; Auckland had a narrow advantage after 9 holes; and then Southland made their charge over the last three holes. Tae Koh suffered his first defeat for Auckland losing the last hole; Johnny Ratcliffe was 1up with three to play but was defeated down the last hole; Sam An was involved in a tight struggle and his match finished all square; Fraser Wilkin appeared to be in charge of his match and duly won 2 and 1; but Ryan Fox struggled all day off the tee and was defeated 4 and 3.
So it was first time finallists Southland who met the favoured Bay of Plenty team and Southland duly delivered. For the first time in 61 years the Inter Provincial Matchplay trophy will reside in Invercargill. Auckland congratulates Southland on a magnificent victory.
